The first half of the Women's NCAA Tournament Round of 32 wrapped up on Sunday with No. 1 seeds South Carolina and UCLA advancing to the Sweet 16 despite being challenged by their respective opponents.
South Carolina trailed at halftime against No. 9 seed Indiana, but a strong third quarter helped the Gamecocks get the momentum they needed to find the 64-53 win. That was actually a rematch of last year's Sweet 16, which South Carolina also won in a tight game.
No. 9 seed Richmond started the game against UCLA with confidence and managed to reach halftime tied with the No. 1 overall seed of the tournament. Despite the Spiders' valiant efforts and 27 points from Maggie Doogan, the Bruins took over in the second half. Lauren Betts was key to UCLA's dominance with 30 points and 14 rebounds.
One of the most exciting games of the tournament came earlier Sunday as Kansas State outlasted Kentucky in overtime, 80-79. Kentucky star Georgia Amoore had a perfectly set up floater with two seconds remaining in the extra period, but her shot came up short and her outstanding college career is now officially over.
Duke, Notre Dame, Baylor, TCU and Tennessee also took care of business to punch their tickets. The remaining Sweet 16 field will be determined Monday.
