LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Strong storms on Friday, May 16th, created wind damage across parts of Virginia.

In the ABC13 area, the strongest storms hit across Southside. ABC13’s weather team declared a Weather Alert Day, and many Severe T-Storm Warnings were issued.

Wind gusts of 40 to 60mph were common near Martinsville, Pittsylvania County and north of Danville. Wind blew down trees in Halifax and Charlotte counties with gusts estimated near 70mph. No tornado was observed.

At peak, more than 70,000 Virginia customers lost power. Hampton Roads also suffered strong winds and power outages.
