A Wichita Falls man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for the death of a woman in a traffic crash.

Anastacio Bemol Mendoza, 39, pleaded guilty Friday to manslaughter in the death of Diane Hill Luckett in a wreck at Seymour Highway and Loop 11 on March 16, 2023.

Seventy-eighth District Court Judge Meredith Kennedy credited Mendoza with 737 days spent in the Wichita County Jail.

Bemol was being held Wednesday in the Wichita County Jail, according to online jail records.

Affidavits in the case said Mendoza was driving a pickup at a high rate of speed west on Seymour Highway, ran a red light and crashed into Luckett’s eastbound car, which was turning left onto Loop 11.

Luckett, 63, of Wichita Falls died from her injuries on March 25, 2023, court records show. Mendoza was originally charged shortly after the crash with intoxication assault with a vehicle, a third degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison.

After Luckett's death, a Wichita County grand jury indicted him for manslaughter, a second degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison, court records show.

Police alleged Mendoza displayed behavior indicating he was under the influence of narcotics or another illegal substance on the day of the crash, court documents show.

On two occasions prior to entering the plea agreement, Mendoza was committed for periods in a mental facility where he was determined to be incompetent to stand trial, court records show.
