Bar Louie is shutting down more than a dozen locations nationwide, with two already permanently closed in Illinois.

Here's what to know about the chain's Illinois closures.

Why is Bar Louie closing its restaurants?

Bar Louie announced in a March 27 press release that it voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The chain said it had closed "underperforming locations" prior to the filing "to enhance its financial stability."

It said its operations will continue without interruption at its 31 corporate-owned locations. The chain also closed restaurants in Detroit , Nashville and East Brunswick, New Jersey , among other locations.

"Inflationary pressures have caused consumers, generally, to cut back on dining out. At the same time, menu prices have risen to keep pace with increased food, utility and labor costs," the company's Chief Administrative Officer Leslie Crook wrote in the bankruptcy filing. "As a result, many of the debtors’ restaurants have underperformed, causing a drag on the debtors’ financial performance and management attention."

The chain previously filed for bankruptcy in 2020 , closing 38 locations across the country.
