WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Textron Aviation says its investigation of an employee who died last month reveals nitrogen got into the breathing system the man was using.

Rocky Baldwin, 61, died on Feb. 24 while working in a paint booth at Textron’s east campus in the 9700 block of E. Central. Investigators said he was wearing a ventilator mask.

Sedgwick County officials and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are still investigating the death.

In the meantime, Textron Aviation released its initial findings. A company spokesperson said that oxygen readings in certain locations of the breathing air system were below acceptable levels at the time of the incident.

“The company’s internal investigation found the breathing air system unintentionally allowed nitrogen to get into the system, diluting the oxygen content to below acceptable levels making the air unsafe to breathe,” the spokesperson said.

The company says it has provided its findings to Sedgwick County and OSHA.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rocky Baldwin, a 27-year member of the Textron Aviation team, and express our most heartfelt condolences to the Baldwin family and all those impacted,” the spokesperson said.
