In a tragic turn of events, a young woman succumbed to injuries after attempting to flee a home invasion that urgently turned violent in the South Chicago neighborhood. Mariah Ivy, a 20-year-old from Steger, died following a desperate leap from a third-floor window when an armed assailant invaded the home she was in over the weekend. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday at about 5:15 p.m. in the 8000 block of South Manistee Avenue, saw Ivy and a 21-year-old man threatened at gunpoint by an unknown intruder, according to the Chicago Sun-Times . The confrontation escalated quickly, leaving the pair with little choice but to desperately try to escape by jumping out the window. As reported by CBS News Chicago , the situation escalated when the assailant, who had broken into the apartment, fired a shot at them. Both Ivy and the man sustained injuries from the fall – Ivy suffered from blunt trauma to the body and the man was injured in both legs. Ivy was pronounced dead on Monday afternoon at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she had been taken in critical condition. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has completed an autopsy to understand the exact cause of death further. Meanwhile, the male victim remains in serious condition, grappling to recover from the ordeal. Chicago Police detectives are actively investigating the case. They found a shell casing in the apartment, a grim reminder of the events that transpired, yet no arrests have been made thus far. As the community reels from the shock, details surrounding the home invasion, including the identity of the gunman, remain shrouded in uncertainty.
