AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — A man having a mental health crisis on a bridge was saved by Virginia State Police Sunday, officials say.

Around 1:35 p.m. on March 23, VSP Senior Trooper M. Brill found a man suffering a mental health crisis on the Barterbrook Road Bridge.

Sgt. C.J. Aikens and Senior Trooper J. Cash stationed themselves below to stop traffic if needed.

Multiple other troopers joined Brill to help with the situation, and VSP said they were able to quickly get him away from danger.

After about 40 minutes of talking with the man, a 42-year-old from Tennessee, VSP said he was taken to Augusta Health under an emergency custody order.

"Traffic was never stopped on Interstate 81 as a result of the troopers’ quick actions," VSP said. "Augusta County Sheriff’s deputies as well as the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad assisted in the effort."
