SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Springfield residents should expect some traffic delays downtown starting over the weekend, as work crews continue the full reconstruction of Mill Street between Centennial Boulevard and A Street. According to transportation officials, the pavement of Mill Street is severely deteriorated, and the road itself presents major challenges to pedestrians and cyclists. The Oregon Department of Transportation and the City of Springfield have embarked on a project to rebuild Mill Street, giving a more comfortable ride and improving safety for all users. ODOT said improvements will include new pavement and sidewalks, added bike lanes, upgraded sewer and stormwater facilities and more. Work on Mill Street began in September 2024, but ODOT officials said the weekend of March 22 will see crews seeking to complete tasks that will cause more disruption than usual. Officials said that on March 22, traffic signals at the intersection of Main Street and Mill Street will be deactivated while utility worker move power lines to newly-installed poles. Officials said they expect the work to be completed that day, but traffic lights may be out for the whole weekend.
