CLEVELAND — There will be two Pitinos coaching in the round of 32 of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Richard Pitino and 10th-seeded New Mexico made sure of that when the Lobos upset seventh-seeded Marquette 75-66 Friday night. It is the first time since 2012 that New Mexico (27-7) has reached the second round and seventh time in school history. The Lobos will play either No. 2 Michigan State (27-6) or No. 15 Bryant (23-11). After leading for most of the first half, New Mexico found itself in a dogfight thanks to the hot hand of David Joplin, who scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for the Golden Eagles (23-11). The game featured 11 lead changes and was tied at 55 with 7:47 before the Lobos, and particularly Donovan Dent, took over. Dent finished with 21 points and six assists and Nelly Junior Joseph had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the way. Tru Washington shot 5 of 8 and added six rebounds. Senior Kam Jones was held below his average on a 6-of-14 shooting night for Marquette and finished with 15 points and five assists. Ben Gold added nine points, all in the first half. It's 72-63 New Mexico with 37.7 left behind the hot hands of Donovan Dent (21 points), Nelly Junior Joseph (19) and Tru Washington. A 3-pointer by Marquette star Kam Jones with 2:56 made it 67-61 New Mexico, but it's been all Lobos in the last four-plus minutes. Nelly Junior Joseph has 19 points, Donovan Dent has 18, Tru Washington has 10 and CJ Noland has nine for New Mexico. It's been David Joplin (25 points) and Jones (13) or bust for Marquette in the second half. Donovan Dent (18 points) and Nelly Junior Joseph (17) have sparked the Lobos, who have scored eight of the last 11 and lead 63-58 with 4:58 in a game that has seen 10 lead changes. David Joplin has 25 for the Golden Eagles. There have been seven lead changes in a 55-55 game with 7:47 left. Nelly Junior Joseph (15 points) and Donovan Dent (12) lead New Mexico. David Joplin has 22 points and is just eight off tying his career high. A Tru Washington layup followed by split free throws by Mustapha Amzil gives New Mexico a 53-51 lead with 10:06 left in regulation. A bucket by Filip Borovicanin followed by a one-and-done on the other end gave the Lobos a chance to take the lead back. When New Mexico and Marquette come out of the break, the Lobos have the ball under their basket down 51-50. The Golden Eagles lead 51-48 with 12:26 remaining in regulation. David Joplin has scored 11 of Marquette's 19 points this half and is shooting 6-of-7 from the floor. That offsets a 15-point night from Nelly Junior Joseph. Both teams are shooting 46 percent from the floor. Of note, New Mexico's leading score Donovan Dent (20.6 ppg) has 10. Marquette's leading score Kam Jones (19.3) has eight. Chase Ross gave Marquette a 47-46 lead with 13:51 left, but the half has belonged to David Joplin, who has scored nine of his 18 points in the last six minutes. Donovan Dent and Nelly Junior Joseph each have 10 points and the Lobos are shooting 56 percent from behind the arc. They have a 43-40 lead with 15:53 left. David Joplin's 13 paces the Golden Eagles, who are shooting 13-of-32. David Joplin split a pair of free throws to draw the Golden Eagles within a point, but size got to Marquette again as two great defensive stops turned into points on the other end. It's 41-36 New Mexico with 17:17 left in regulation. The Golden Eagles scored seven of the last 10 points and trail New Mexico 35-32 at the break. Ben Gold (9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists) leads the way for Marquette, which shot 10-of-27 in the first half. David Joplin also has nine to go along with two boards for Marquette. New Mexico is very balanced with CJ Noland (9 points), Donovan Dent (8), Tru Washington, Filip Borovicanin (6) and Nelly Joseph (6) knocking them down. There have been only two lead changes. New Mexico will start the second half with the ball. It's 32-27 New Mexico with 1:51 left and length is once again playing a factor. The Lobos are shooting 44 percent from the floor, but hold a 16-6 edge in the paint. The Lobos hold a 28-21 lead with 3:23 left in the first half but have cooled to a 10-of-25 showing from the floor. CJ Noland, Donovan Dent and Filip Borovicanin each have six for New Mexico. Ben Gold's scoring line hasn't changed. He leads the Golden Eagles with nine. It's 26-21 New Mexico with 4:58 left thanks to the solid play of Ben Gold. Gold is shooting 50 percent from the field and leads the team in points (nine), rebounds (four) and assists (four). CJ Noland leads the Lobos with six points. While the 3-point line is keeping the Golden Eagles in a 21-18 contest, the Lobos continue to crash the glass with 12 boards and spread the scoring. The current five for Marquette has just one rebound. The Golden Eagles have also turned the ball over five times in the first 12 minutes. It's 19-18 New Mexico over Marquette with 9:31 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles are 5-of-9 from behind the arc with Ben Gold (3), David Joplin (1) and Chase Ross (1) all burying a trey. It's New Mexico 19-12 over Marquette with 11:59 left in the first half. Noland is 2-of-2 from behind the arc and has six points for the Lobos. Donovan Dent has four. The Golden Eagles are shooting 4-of-9 from the floor, which is nowhere near the 8-for-12 clip New Mexico is hitting. With a starting lineup that averages 6-foot-7, the Lobos are controlling the boards early and playing an inside-out method to lead 16-12 with 13:28 left. All but one bucket has come from behind the arc for the Golden Eagles. It's 7-3 New Mexico with 15:57 left in the first half. The Lobos are 3-of-6 and have held Maquette to 1-of-4 so far. Filip Borovicanin had three points to lead all scorers. The Golden Eagles are limited to Ben Gold's three.
