A number of accomplished Washington-Liberty High School graduates continue to enjoy athletic success on the college level. Women’s Diving: Ellie Joyce dives for the Division I women’s team at the University of North Carolina. In the recent Atlantic Coast Conference championships, the sophomore placed seventh in the 1-meter competition, 12th in the platform and 16th in the 3-meter. Joyce then placed high enough in the NCAA Zone meet to qualify for the national competition in the 1-meter and 3-meter. Joyce was a district, region and state champion at Washington-Liberty. Sadie Smith dives for the women’s team at Division III Bowdoin College. The senior finished high in the platform, 1-meter and 3-meter in the conference championships and moved on to participate in NCAA Region III competition. Men’s Diving: Evan Brown dives for the Division I Duke University men’s team. The junior participated in the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA Zone B championships. Football: Sophomore defensive lineman Elijah Hughes competed for the Division I University of Southern California football team during the fall. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Hughes played in seven games. He made four solo tackles and had two assists. He had 1.5 tackles for losses. At the end of the season, Hughes made the decision to transfer and play at Notre Dame for the 2025-26 campaign. Quincy Parks was a junior wide receiver for the Division III Ferrum College football team during the fall. In 10 games, the 6-foot, 180-pound Parks caught seven passes for 70 yards and had one carry. Baseball: Jack Couture has seen action as a freshman pitcher for the Division III Haverford College baseball team this spring. In two appearances, the right-hander has worked five innings, two in relief when he earned a save, then three frames in a start when he did not get a decision. Couture has allowed one hit in those five innings, has not given up a run or walked a batter and has five strikeouts with a 0.00 earned run average. Sam Dozier is a senior pitcher on the Division III Lebanon Valley College baseball team. So far this season, he has pitched in two games with a strikeout. Luke Harnishfeger is a freshman catcher for the Division III University of Mary Washington baseball team this spring. Women’s Soccer: Abby Welker was a freshman midfielder on the Division III Case Western Reserve University women’s soccer team during the fall. She played in 19 games, taking 10 shots on goal and having three assists. Welker took four shots and had an assist against Capital University. Men’s Basketball: Brian Weiser was a 6-3 sophomore guard/forward for the Division III Christopher Newport University men’s basketball team. Weiser played in 14 games with one start. He scored eight points, had nine rebounds, blocked four shots and had three steals.
