Anne Arundel County firefighters found a man dead Sunday morning while putting out an “intentionally set” house fire in Pasadena, according to a news release.

Emergency personnel did not identify the man because investigators believe he died from suicide.

According to the release, units responded to the 800 block of North Shore Drive at about 3:20 a.m. after a neighbor reported the blaze. Firefighters found the house “fully engulfed in flames.”

Capt. Jenny Macallair, a department spokesperson, said it took 35 minutes to control the fire and that about 45 fire personnel responded to the scene.

After finding the man inside, investigators determined that the man had started the fire before taking his own life — an account corroborated by the Office of the State Medical Examiner.

Macallair said in an interview that investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started but said that an “accelerant” was used.

Due to the manner of the man’s death, officials are not considering this to be a fire-related casualty.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department has responded to one fatal fire this year: a Feb. 20 blaze in Annapolis in which an 84-year-old man and 70-year-old woman were killed.
