A Maryland man is charged with first-degree homicide in the stabbing death of a 26-year-old woman in Phillipsburg .

Jamari E. Dortch, 28, of Rossville, also is charged with second-degree aggravated assault; third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose; and third-degree endangering an injured victim.

The Warren County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday evening Dortch was placed under arrest this past Saturday by members of the United States Marshal’s Service Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Dortch is being held at the Prince Georges County jail in Maryland and is awaiting extradition back to Warren County , New Jersey.

Upon his return to New Jersey, Dortch will be taken to the Warren County jail as he awaits a detention motion, authorities said. It’s unclear if Dortch has an attorney yet to represent him in the case.

Warren County Special State Investigator and Acting Deputy Chief of Detectives Melissa Fehr said the incident unfolded around 3 a.m. Friday at the residence in the 400 block of Anderson Street. A patrol officer was flagged down by a person reporting the incident, Fehr said.

The woman was found unresponsive by investigators and had stab wounds. Both police and Emergency Medical Services workers attempted life-saving measures, she said.

The victim was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where she later was pronounced dead, Fehr said.

The victim and Dortch knew each other, Fehr said. Authorities did not say what the motive for the stabbing was or how they connected Dortch to the stabbing.

Upon conviction, a homicide charge carries a maximum sentence of life in state prison. Second-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison, and third-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of five years in state prison.

The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Phillipsburg Police Department and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.
