GameStop, once the go-to destination for video game sales, is continuing its dramatic transformation. In a newly released SEC filing, the retailer confirmed plans to shutter a significant number of stores in the coming fiscal year, following the closure of nearly 600 U.S. locations in 2024. As digital game sales continue to dominate, the company is downsizing its retail footprint while making an unexpected gamble: investing in Bitcoin.

The company has spent years battling declining in-person sales and the broader shift toward digital gaming. Now, it is attempting to stay relevant by diversifying—not just in collectibles, where it has become an authorized PSA dealer, but also in cryptocurrency, an unpredictable but potentially lucrative venture.

GameStop’s Bitcoin strategy remains vague, with no cap on how much of the cryptocurrency it might buy or sell. But the announcement has already rekindled interest from the same online investors who once propelled its stock to astonishing highs.

Meanwhile, the company is retreating from international markets, planning to sell off operations in France and Canada. That means fewer physical stores but potentially more focus on e-commerce and alternative revenue streams.
