RALEIGH — Jon Scheyer hasn’t forgotten his playing days, particularly from his time around Chicago as one of the best hoopers to hit the court in Illinois. Chicago native Patrick Beverley went viral on social media ahead of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, telling a story on his podcast about Scheyer’s skill and willingness to play anywhere in the Chicagoland area.“If anyone doesn't know Jon Scheyer, he played at Glenbrook North (High School). When I say he never ducked any smoke from any athlete in Chicago, he never ducked any smoke,” Beverley said. Beverley went on to say people called Scheyer, “White Mike,” which was a nod to Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. “For me, I take a lot of pride in the city of Chicago and going wherever there was a game, I'd go there to play,” Scheyer said Saturday from Lenovo Center as No. 1 Duke (32-3) prepares for a second-round March Madness matchup with No. 9 seed Baylor (20-14) on Sunday (2:40 p.m., CBS).“For (Beverley) to talk about me that way — I'm not sure "White Mike" was the name, but I'll take it.”Scheyer, who is in his third season as head coach of the Blue Devils, joked that he doesn’t get that same level of respect from his players. “They have completely disregarded the fact that I played at all. They think that I did not play whatsoever,” Scheyer said with a smile. “Isaiah (Evans) last week, there was a picture of me in my playing days – black-and-white picture – he said it wasn't photoshopped at all, like that's the way it was. So I asked our guys a couple days ago to call me, ‘White Mike.’ They refused. They're just going to call me Coach. But that's nice of Pat to talk about me that way.”If Duke players need a reminder, here's a look at Scheyer's stats from his high school days and time with the Blue Devils.A four-year player for the Blue Devils, Scheyer concluded his career as the only player in program history to record 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 250 3-pointers and 200 steals. He led Duke to a 115-79 record, meaning he won nearly 80% of his games as a player. As a senior in 2010, Scheyer averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Duke won 35 of its 40 games that season, capping the year with the program’s fourth national championship. Scheyer’s 1,470 minutes played as a senior remains the ACC single-season record.During his time at Glenbrook High School outside of Chicago, Scheyer became one of the top scorers in Illinois High School basketball history, finishing his high school career with 3,034 points. Scheyer averaged 32 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals as a senior. During the Proviso West Holiday Tournament as a senior, Scheyer scored 21 points in 75 seconds, capping his career as a two-time Gatorade state player of the year and McDonald’s All-American. He also won a Peach Jam title in 2004.
