KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A home in Kansas City, Missouri goes up in flames, making it unlivable for one man and his teenage granddaughter.

The family who lived at the home near 57th and Garfield said nearly everything inside was destroyed by the fire. They said it happened on Saturday just after 6p.m.

Aniyah Dawkins caught video of the flames after escaping the fire.

When the 19-year-old’s not at college, she lives at home with her grandpa. Dawkins said her grandpa was at the store when the fire started.

She heard the smoke alarms and got out of the house safely.

“I was just crying, and my grandpa was comforting me,” Dawkins said, “He was letting me know that everything would be alright, but it’s just like everything is gone and you just can’t believe it.”

Dawkins said they were renting the home.

Her grandpa’s been raising her since she was 8 years old. She’s grateful to be alive.

“Early detection is key to saving that person’s life,” Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said, “and then also getting that phone call to 911 so we can get here as early as possible.”

Hopkins said firefighters battled heavy smoke and flames coming from this home.

Crews got the fire out in about 30 minutes.

KCFD said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Hopkins said investigators believe the fire likely started toward the back of the home and traveled to the front, causing extensive damage.

“My grandpa lost all of his clothes, all of his shoes, all of our TVs, couches, gone,” Dawkins said. “Even the refrigerator is done for. Really nothing is salvageable.”

While a lot of Dawkins’ items were at school, she lost her laptop in the fire.

“Don’t know her from Adam, just trying to help,” Andrue Stewart said.

He’s the owner and head chef at Holy Brunch KC.

He doesn’t know Dawkins but heard about the fire. He’s donating a laptop to Dawkins for her college studies.

“I’ve been in times in my life, where, if I would’ve had that one person to give me that little push, it would’ve let me know I’m not by myself,” Stewart said, “so even if it’s small I want to be a part of it.”

Dawkins also started a GoFundMe Page . It’s raised more than $4,400.

She said the University of Saint Mary is working with her family to provide clothes and other resources.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Dawkins said. “I feel super grateful.”
