A six-man pitching rotation might be trending up in Major League Baseball . The Mariners tried it in 2021, the Astros in 2022, the Mariners and Nationals in 2023, and many other teams have done it recently. Per a post Monday by MLB .com writer John Denton, St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said the Cardinals might be next. The lineup would feature Sonny Gray, Erick Fedde, Steven Matz, Miles Mikolas, Andre Pallante and Michael McGreevy. Gray was named the Cardinal’s opening day pitcher it was announced via X on Sunday. “He’s our dude,” Marmol said of Gray . Early in the offseason, Gray, Fedde, Mikolas and Pallante seemed to be the Cardinals top four options with Matz and McGreevy fighting for the fifth and final spot. Once spring training began, Matz seemed to have the top spot locked up until McGreevy started getting hot. Matz, who turns 34 in May, has had a solid start to his spring training. He has allowed only five earned runs on 19.2 innings pitched. Mikolas and Gray being 35 and 36, respectively, are both unwilling to leave the Cardinals. This has led to questions being raised on if St. Louis is not giving enough opportunity to its youth. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Michael McGreevy throws a pitch during the first inning against the New York Mets at Clover Park. The 24-year old McGreevy however, is showing he belongs. In four outings this spring, McGreevy has allowed just two runs through 11 2/3 innings pitched with zero walks on 43 batters faced. That includes a 1.54 ERA and 0.77 WHIP. His performance this spring leaves Marmol no choice but to think about a six-man rotation. McGreevy was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals at pick 18 in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. Since then, the California product has started 51 contests over the past two seasons at the Triple-A level. With both young players and season veterans in the St. Louis’ bullpen, a lot of questions still need to be answered with opening day approaching.
