POTTSVILLE — Two polling locations in Shenandoah could change if approved by Schuylkill County Commissioners next week.

At Wednesday’s work session, Director of Elections Albert Gricoski said polling locations at the Schuylkill County Historical Fire Museum and the Columbia Hose & Steam Fire Company could change effective for the May 20 election.

Gricoski said the location at the fire museum in the third precinct will change to the Shenandoah High Rise, 100 S. Main St., because more space is needed and it is handicapped accessible. In past years, voters accessed the second floor via an elevator, which at times didn’t work consistently, so they moved to the first floor. However, more space is needed because the first floor isn’t large enough, he said.

Those who vote at the fire company in the borough’s fifth precinct will go to Malocu’s, 601 W. Washington St. The fire company asked them to move because they needed immediate access to emergency vehicles. Also, voters occasionally parked in front of garage doors, which impeded fire personnel from leaving, Gricoski said, adding this isn’t the first fire company to make such a request.

In other news, the salary board approved $5,000 increases for assistant district attorneys until a full-time assistant district attorney is hired. The board tabled voting on incentive pay for three employees of the adult probation office, based on commissioner Larry Padora’s request for additional information.

District Attorney Michael O’Pake said he is having a difficult time filling the full-time assistant district attorney position and the part-time one. Applications are coming in, but the candidates are not qualified, he said.

He said the problem isn’t unique to the county.

“It’s not an easy job,” he said of being an assistant district attorney.

Providing additional compensation to the assistant district attorney’s in the office is “appropriate because it is budget-neutral,” he said.
